Key to my heart

Key to my heart

I remember when I first knew she was the one, the day I gave her the key to my heart. It was a beautiful evening, and we enjoyed dinner on the beach. Dating for a year, I decided this anniversary vacation was a perfect time to show her how much I love her. I timed it perfectly. Our flaming dessert arrived at the table, and she was so mesmerized that she didn’t even notice it as I took out the box from my pocket. It’s been three years since that day, and even though we have had our rough patches, I know with all my heart that I want to spend the rest of my life with this woman.

This year, we are celebrating in a cozy mountain cabin. We had a full day of chasing waterfalls and wine tasting. Now, I wait while she finishes dressing for dinner. The candles around the room are flickering, and smooth jazz flows from the speakers. The private chef just brought a beautiful little charcuterie tray and placed it on the patio table, along with a decanter of dark red wine and two glasses. I’m so nervous, and my heart is racing.  She has been upstairs for more than forty minutes. Just as I turn to pace another lap around the room, I hear a creak of the bedroom door. I look up towards the sound, and then the air leaves my chest. I cannot do anything but watch her slowly float down the stairs to me. She is stunning in a low-cut black dress and ruby earrings dangling from her earlobes. Her hair pulled back loosely, allowing the ornate skeleton key necklace to be displayed on her chest.

She reaches out her hand to me. I take it and put it to my lips for a lingering kiss, then gently guide her towards the patio door, where I have a surprise waiting for her. I don’t think I will ever be able to top this anniversary, but I will gladly spend the rest of my life trying.
