It was getting harder and harder for Jane to get herself ready to leave the house. She had started her maternity leave a week early, and all she wanted to do was enjoy the last days getting ready for the baby and get some much-needed rest. Unfortunately, she wasn’t very successful at either. Sleep was nearly impossible, her back was aching, and her mind was racing all night long.
This morning, she rolled out of bed exhausted and achy and considered canceling her lunch date with her Mother. She adored her Mother and loved how her mom always made time for her. She just couldn’t cancel today.
Using the restroom for what seemed like the fifteenth time that morning, Jane was finally ready to go. Her mom helped her settle into the passenger seat and even buckled the seat belt for her, just like when she was a little girl. Feeling as big as a house, Jane reclined the back of the seat to relieve some pressure.
Jane sang with the radio between small talk, trying to keep her mind off of how uncomfortable she felt. She was so distracted that she didn’t notice her Mother change direction until they pulled up in front of her friend Marcy’s house.
Jane rubbed her hand across her lower belly. “Why are we stopping here?” then, letting out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.
Her door opened. “We have a surprise for you!”
Jane forced a smile, not wanting to ruin the surprise. Making her way to the front door was a challenge. All of the motion was making her feel worse. With a funny feeling, she knocked on the door. As the door creaked open, her heart began to thud, and she felt a whooshing as her belly became tight.
“Surprise!” everyone shouted, not knowing that Jane was the one with the real surprise.
